Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions homeowners actually ask
Divine Touch Home Improvements offers free in-home estimates, works on flexible deposit-and-progress payment schedules, and pulls permits under the applicable local jurisdiction. We serve Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Portsmouth, and every step of the process is available in Spanish or English.
We get the same questions on almost every phone call, so we put the real answers here in plain language. If you're comparing contractors or trying to figure out what a remodel actually involves, this page should clear up most of it before you ever pick up the phone.
These answers are grouped by topic so you can jump straight to what you need — estimates, pricing, timelines, permits, what happens once work starts, warranty coverage, our service area, and how we handle bilingual jobs. If your question isn't covered, call us at (757) 731-4151 and we'll walk through it with you directly.
Getting started & estimates
What happens when you first call us, how the estimate visit works, and whether we take on smaller jobs alongside full remodels.
See all our services- Do you offer free estimates?
- Yes. Every estimate starts with a free in-home visit — there's no cost and no obligation to hire us. We look at the space, talk through what you want, take measurements, and note any conditions that could affect scope or price. You'll get a written estimate afterward, not a number pulled out of thin air on the spot.
- What happens during the site visit?
- We walk the space with you, ask about how you use the room and what's bothering you about it now, and check things like electrical, plumbing, subfloor, and structural conditions that aren't always obvious. We take photos and measurements, discuss material options and rough price ranges, and answer questions on-site so you leave with a real sense of the project.
- How long does it take to get an estimate?
- The in-home visit usually runs 45 to 90 minutes depending on project size. For straightforward jobs like a fence or flooring in one room, we can often give you a written estimate within a few days. Larger projects like a full kitchen or home renovation take longer since we need to price out cabinetry, fixtures, and structural work in detail.
- Do you take on small jobs, or only full remodels?
- We take on both. A lot of our calendar is full kitchen, bathroom, and home renovations, but we also handle smaller general home improvement jobs — a single room of flooring, a fence repair, a bathroom fixture swap, a few rooms of interior painting. If it's too small for us to schedule efficiently, we'll tell you upfront instead of stringing you along.
- What should I have ready before the estimate visit?
- It helps to have a rough idea of your budget range and priorities, any inspiration photos or Pinterest boards, and access to the space including attics, crawlspaces, or panels if relevant. You don't need drawings or a finalized plan — that's part of what we help sort out during the visit and the estimate that follows.
Pricing & payment
How we structure pricing, what allowances mean, deposit requirements, accepted payment methods, and an honest answer on financing.
Ask about pricing- How is pricing structured on a project?
- Most estimates are broken into labor, materials, and any allowances for items you'll select later, like tile or fixtures. We price the scope we walk through during the estimate visit, and anything that changes once we open walls or you decide to upgrade a material gets documented as a change order with a clear price before we proceed.
- What is an allowance and how does it work?
- An allowance is a placeholder dollar amount built into your estimate for items you haven't picked yet — cabinet hardware, tile, light fixtures, and similar finish selections. If you choose something that costs more than the allowance, the difference gets added to your total. If you spend less, it comes off. It keeps the estimate honest before final selections are made.
- Do you require a deposit?
- Yes, we require a deposit to schedule a project and order materials, with the balance paid on a progress schedule tied to milestones as work is completed rather than all at once. The exact deposit percentage and payment schedule are laid out in your written contract before any work begins, so there are no surprises about when payments are due.
- What payment methods do you accept?
- We accept cash, checks, credit cards, debit cards, and online payments. Choose whatever works best for you, and we'll confirm the accepted method for your specific payment before the deposit or any progress payment is due, so there's no confusion when it's time to pay.
- Do you offer financing?
- We don't currently offer in-house financing. Some homeowners arrange their own financing through a bank, credit union, or home equity line before starting a project, and that works fine on our end — we just need the funds available on the payment schedule outlined in your contract. Ask us and we can talk through timing either way.
Timelines & scheduling
Rough timelines by project type, how far ahead you should book, and the most common reasons a schedule slips.
See kitchen remodel timelines- How long does a typical kitchen remodel take?
- A full kitchen remodel typically runs 3 to 6 weeks once demolition starts, depending on layout changes, whether we're moving plumbing or electrical, and how far out cabinets and countertops are on order. A cosmetic refresh — new countertops, backsplash, and paint without moving anything — can be finished in under two weeks.
- How long does a bathroom remodel take?
- Most bathroom remodels take 1 to 3 weeks of active work. A straightforward refresh with the existing layout kept in place moves faster, while a full gut with new plumbing lines, a tub-to-shower conversion, or moving fixtures adds time. Tile and vanity lead times can also affect the schedule, so we build those into your project timeline upfront.
- How far in advance do I need to book?
- It depends on the season and project size, but we generally recommend reaching out 3 to 8 weeks before you want work to start, especially for kitchens and full renovations. Smaller jobs like fencing or a single room of flooring can sometimes be scheduled sooner. Call us at (757) 731-4151 and we'll give you our current availability.
- What causes delays once a project starts?
- The most common causes are material backorders, especially on custom cabinetry or special-order tile, and hidden conditions found once we open walls or floors — old wiring, water damage, or framing issues. Weather affects exterior work like roofing and fencing. We communicate delays as soon as we know about them so you're never left guessing.
- Do you work one project at a time or run multiple crews?
- We schedule crews based on project size and scope so your job gets consistent attention rather than being juggled against several others at once. Once your project is on the calendar, we give you a start date and a realistic sequence of work, and we stick to it unless something outside our control — like a material delay — comes up.
Permits & licensing
Who pulls the permit, which city handles it, and where we stand on licensing, insurance, and inspections.
Learn about full home renovations- Who is responsible for pulling permits?
- We handle the permit application on projects that require one, working with the building department in whichever city the job is located — Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, or Portsmouth. Each city has its own process and turnaround time, and we factor that into your project timeline so there aren't surprise delays waiting on paperwork.
- Are all projects permitted?
- No. Cosmetic work like painting, flooring replacement without subfloor changes, or a straightforward fixture swap often doesn't require a permit. Structural changes, most electrical and plumbing work, roofing replacement, and additions generally do. We'll tell you during the estimate whether your specific project needs a permit and factor that into the timeline and cost.
- Are you licensed and insured?
- Yes. Divine Touch Home Improvements holds [VA CLASS __ CONTRACTOR LICENSE #] and carries general liability coverage through [GENERAL LIABILITY INSURANCE CARRIER]. Our workers' comp status is [WORKERS' COMP STATUS]. We're glad to provide documentation before you sign a contract — ask and we'll have it ready for you.
- Will an inspector come out during my project?
- On permitted work, yes — the local building department schedules inspections at specific stages, such as after rough electrical or plumbing is run and again at final completion. We coordinate the inspection scheduling directly with the city and let you know ahead of time if an inspector will need access to the home.
- What happens if a permitted project fails inspection?
- It happens occasionally, usually for a minor code detail rather than a major problem. We correct the item and schedule the reinspection, and this is included in our work at no extra charge to you since it's our responsibility to meet code on permitted work. It typically adds a few days rather than derailing the schedule.
During the project
What daily work looks like, how we handle cleanup and dust, keeping the household running, and who to call with questions.
See bathroom remodel details- Can I live in the house while work is happening?
- In most cases, yes. Kitchen and bathroom remodels usually mean that specific room is unusable for part of the project, but the rest of the house stays livable. For larger full home renovations involving multiple rooms or major systems, we'll talk through what's realistic for your specific project during the estimate so you can plan accordingly.
- How do you handle daily cleanup and dust?
- Crews clean up debris and tools at the end of each work day so the site isn't left in disarray overnight. For dusty work like demolition or sanding, we use containment barriers and plastic sheeting to keep dust out of the rest of the house as much as possible, though some fine dust is unavoidable with certain tasks.
- Will water or power be shut off during the project?
- For plumbing work, water to the affected fixture or line is typically shut off only during that specific task, and we try to minimize how long a full shutoff lasts. Electrical work may require breakers to be off for safety during that portion of the job. We'll let you know ahead of time whenever a shutoff is needed.
- What about pets and kids during construction?
- We ask that pets be kept away from active work areas for their safety and so tools, materials, and open floors aren't disturbed. The same goes for young kids — construction zones have sharp tools, exposed wiring, and trip hazards that aren't safe for unsupervised access. We're happy to work around nap schedules or specific access needs where we can.
- Who do I contact with questions once work starts?
- You'll have a direct point of contact for your project rather than being routed through a general office line. That's typically the lead on your job or the owner directly, depending on project size. We'll give you a name and number at the start of the project so questions get answered quickly instead of piling up.
- What happens if you find hidden damage once walls are open?
- We stop and show you what we found — usually water damage, old wiring, or rot behind a wall or under a floor. We explain the options and the added cost before doing any additional work, and it gets documented as a change order. We never just proceed and add it to the invoice without your sign-off first.
Warranty & aftercare
What our workmanship warranty covers, how manufacturer warranties fit in, and what to do if something needs attention after we leave.
Learn about our roofing work- Do you offer a workmanship warranty?
- Yes. We stand behind our labor with a [WORKMANSHIP WARRANTY TERM] workmanship warranty covering our installation work. If something we installed fails or was done incorrectly within that period, we come back and fix it at no charge. We'll spell out exactly what's covered in your written contract before work begins.
- What about manufacturer warranties on materials?
- Materials like appliances, roofing shingles, cabinetry, and fixtures carry their own manufacturer warranties separate from our workmanship warranty. We register products where the manufacturer requires it and keep documentation with your project paperwork, so if a material fails, you have what you need to file a claim directly with the manufacturer.
- What's a punch list and when does it happen?
- The punch list is a walkthrough near the end of the project where we go room by room with you, note anything that needs touching up — paint edges, caulk lines, a squeaky cabinet door — and get it corrected before we consider the job finished. It's your chance to flag anything before final payment and sign-off.
- What if something goes wrong after you've left?
- Call us. If it's covered under our workmanship warranty, we schedule a return visit and fix it at no charge. If it's a manufacturer issue like an appliance malfunction, we'll help you understand who to contact, but the repair itself falls under that manufacturer's warranty rather than ours.
- Do you check in after the project is finished?
- We're reachable at (757) 731-4151 anytime something comes up, and we'd rather hear from you early than have a small issue turn into a bigger one. We don't disappear once the final payment clears — a lot of our work comes from repeat homeowners who call us back for the next project.
Service area
Which cities we work in day to day, how far out we'll travel, and whether outlying neighborhoods cost more to reach.
View our full service area- What areas do you serve?
- We work primarily in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Portsmouth. Our office is based in Virginia Beach at 424 Investors Place, Suite 108, and most of our projects are within a short drive of there, which keeps our scheduling efficient and our pricing straightforward for homeowners in those four cities.
- Do you travel outside Hampton Roads?
- Generally we stay within Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Portsmouth. If you're just outside that area, give us a call at (757) 731-4151 and describe the project and location — we'll let you know honestly whether it's something we can take on or whether it's outside a reasonable travel distance for us.
- Will you travel to Sandbridge, Ocean View, or Churchland?
- Yes, those neighborhoods fall within our regular service cities — Sandbridge and Ocean View are part of Virginia Beach and Norfolk respectively, and Churchland is in Portsmouth. We treat them the same as any other job in those cities; there's no separate outlying-area fee just for being farther from the main part of town.
- Do you charge more for jobs farther from your office?
- No, we don't add a distance surcharge for projects within our four service cities. Pricing is based on the scope of the work itself — materials, labor, and complexity — not how far the crew has to drive within Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, or Portsmouth.
Spanish-language service
How estimates, contracts, and day-to-day communication work if you prefer to handle your project in Spanish.
Read more about our team- Can I get an estimate in Spanish?
- Yes. Se habla español throughout the entire process, starting with the first phone call. If you're more comfortable discussing your project in Spanish, we'll conduct the estimate visit, explain scope and pricing, and answer your questions in Spanish from start to finish.
- Can the contract be explained in Spanish?
- Yes. We'll walk through your written contract in Spanish line by line before you sign, covering scope, payment schedule, and warranty terms, so there's no confusion about what you're agreeing to. We want every homeowner to fully understand the agreement regardless of which language they're more comfortable in.
- Will the crew on-site communicate in Spanish?
- Yes, day-to-day communication on-site can be handled in Spanish. If questions come up during the work — a material selection, a scheduling question, something the crew found once a wall is open — you can work through it in Spanish rather than needing a translator or waiting for someone else to explain.
- Is Spanish-language service available for all four service cities?
- Yes, bilingual service is available for every project regardless of whether it's in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, or Portsmouth. It's not a special add-on — it's simply how we operate as a bilingual, family-owned company, from the first call to the final walkthrough.
